Diagnosing fault code P0A80 on a hybrid vehicle

P0A80 — Replace Hybrid Battery Pack

The single most common hybrid code we see. The battery ECU has compared block voltages and found the spread between the strongest and weakest blocks is too wide to manage — effectively the ECU saying it can no longer keep the pack balanced.

  • SeverityNeeds attention
  • SystemHybrid
  • Commonly seen onToyota Prius, Toyota Aqua, Corolla Axio Hybrid
  • What it usually costsModule repair costs a fraction of replacement when degradation is localised. A full genuine pack is a larger one-off cost but carries the full warranty.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Fuel economy drops noticeably, often by 20–35%
  • Engine runs almost constantly, even at a standstill
  • Battery gauge fills and empties unusually fast
  • Hybrid system warning light or red triangle
  • Reduced or no electric-only running

Usual causes

  • Genuine capacity loss in one or more modules after years of cycling
  • High heat exposure causing accelerated degradation in the middle of the pack
  • Blocked or failed cooling fan letting pack temperature climb
  • Corroded busbar or terminal creating an uneven path between blocks

What we actually do

  • Read every block individually and log voltage and internal resistance under load
  • Check the cooling fan, ducts and temperature spread before blaming the pack
  • Tell you honestly whether a module-level repair will hold or whether replacement is the right call
  • Fit and verify the correct pack, clear codes, reset adaptations and road test
